In 2014, through funding from the McMaster Student Life Enhancement Fund (SLEF), the Lyons New Media Centre purchased a 3D printer for use by McMaster students. An Ultimaker 2 3D printer is located in the Lyons New Media Centre, 4th floor of Mills library.  Due to the popularity of the service, a second printer was purchased in the summer of 2015.

The 3D printer uses PLA (Polylactic Acid) filament. PLA is a biodegradable polymer derived from renewable resources, such as corn starch, and does not produce UFCs (Ultrafine Particles).

As the printer was funded by SLEF, there will be no cost for printing at this time. Students can send their print request to the LNMC using the online web form found on the website. All files must be in .STL format for printing. Print time will depend on a number of factors (size of file, number of print jobs in queue, etc.)

Make sure to check out our social media sites for examples of printed objects!
