Inquiry in Biochemical Techniques - Course Guide
Referencing and Citation
It is strongly recommended that learn and use RefWorks as a means to manage and format your citations in the ACS style.
If you need additional help using RefWorks, there are many video tutorials available.
- Refworks Tutorial (classic version)
- Refworks Tutorial (new 2.0 beta version)
You may also wish to consult the ACS style guide at Thode Library quick reference or this webpage.
Using PubMed
It is preferable to access PubMed through the library, because it will automatically integrate and provide you with links to the articles if they are not freely available.
While PubMed searches are generally straightforward, you may wish to get help on using certain features, such as how to search by author or journal name, how to find systematic reviews, or importing PubMed citations into RefWorks.
BLAST
- Access BLAST
- If you have a nucleotide sequence, choose nucleotide BLAST, and if you have a protein (amino acid) sequence, choose protein BLAST.
- Paste or type your sequence into the large Query Sequence box.
- Choose the database you wish to search in the Search Set area. The default is the human genome, but you can also choose Mouse, or if you are matching to any other organism (bacteria, etc.), choose other (defaults to nucleotide collection).
- Optimize for somewhat similar sequences (blastn) will attempt to match to a larger variety of sequences - useful if you're not sure how close your sequence will match to the actual.
- BLAST away!
