The United States Code is a consolidation and codification of the general and permanent laws of the United States; it does not include temporary, private or local laws.
The United States Code consists of 50 titles, a general
index, a list of acts cited by popular name and various tables. Prior
to Title 1 in the 1982 edition are copies of the following:
- The Declaration of Independence
- Article of Confederation
- the Ordinance of 1787
- the Northwest Territorial Government
- the Constitution of the United States and Amendments
- an Analytical Index to the Constitution of the United States
Beginning with the seventh article, Agriculture, the titles are alphabetically arranged.
To locate a Law in the United States Code either a subject or a statute approach may be used.
Subject Approach
- the General Index provided subject access
- the index consists of 5 volumes in the 1982 edition
- the index provides references to titles and section numbers
- to update using the General Index check the same index, under the same term, in the latest annual supplement
Statute Approach
- when the name of a statute is known, use the list of Acts Cited by Popular Name
- this list is alphabetically arranged according to statute name and provides references from the Statutes at Large to the United States Code.
