The Economic and Social Council coordinates the economic and social work of the United Nations and its specialized agencies. The Council initiates activities relating to education, health, human rights, natural resources,status of women, social welfare, etc.

The Council generally folds two regular sessions a year, each one month long, in New York and Geneva. Usually, the first session is devoted to social and human rights issues, the second session to economic and developmental matters.
