You may have noticed a new sign up on the tower entrance of Mills Library. When we have extended late night hours or offer 24 hour access to the McLay Reading Room, this is the entrance and exit you can use after the rest of Mills has closed.

If you weren't aware of the extended hours being offered at Mills during this year's exam period, check out this story.

Please note that during regular hours of opening, you should use the entrance to Mills located on the North side of the building by the student centre. The late night entrance is not in use during regular building hours.

Students working in the Mills Learning Commons now have a piece of art on the wall to inspire them. The painting by Level IV student, Laura Zajacz (Combined Art and Multimedia) was the winning submission in an art competition sponsored by the Library and organized in partnership with the School of the Arts (SOTA). The theme of the competition for 2006/2007 was ‘inquire’.

The Mills Learning Commons has been recognized by the Project Management Institute as GovSIG Project of the Year. The PMI is the leading management association for project management with 240,000 members in 160 countries. The award recognizes "the quality, art and practice of project management in governments internationally."

The creation of the Mills Learning Commons was a complex undertaking combining both physical construction and service transformation. The project involved approximately 7,000 square feet of renovated space and a vast array of new in-person and virtual services. Completed over a span of approximately 3 years, work activity and deliverables were held to tight time-lines to ensure that student access to the library was not interrupted.

The project was a partnership between the Centre for Leadership in Learning, the Centre for Student Development, McMaster University Libraries, University Technology Services and Physical Plant. McMaster students contributed significantly to the project in terms of participation on planning committees to funding.

The award was presented to the Project Manager, Vivian Lewis (Associate University Librarian, Teaching, Learning and Research), at the PMI North American Congress in Atlanta Georgia on October 7. John Alley, (Director, Project Management Office) who served as a consultant on the initiative, was also recognized at the event.

Earlier this year, the Mills Learning Commons project was presented with the Rudy Heinzl Award of Excellence from the McMaster Students Union.

In addition to current novels, we've also purchased mysteries, sci-fi, romance and some historical fiction. You'll find these new titles on a bookcase in the hallway of Mills Learning Commons (2nd floor) and you can check them out just like any other library book. Please take a look and hopefully you'll find something you like.

The Mills Learning Commons Project is the 2007 recipient of the McMaster Students Union's Rudy Heinzl Award of Excellence. The award "recognizes an outstanding one year achievement which improves the lives of McMaster students." In presenting the award at the MSU's Student Recognition Night, Mr. Heinzl remarked: "People in this room know that the learning experience at McMaster has many facets beyond the classroom. It includes labs, tutorials, extra-curricular activities, and self-directed learning that leads to many hours in our libraries. This year's award recipients have made an outstanding contribution to enriching the student experience in self-directed learning."

The Mills Learning Commons opened last October and has become THE most popular and busiest area in Mills. It is an active, student-centred learning space that integrates traditional and emerging scholarly resources, information technology, expert help and collaborative and individual study space. Planning for the Project first began in December 2003, and when final approval was received by the Board of Governors in June 2005, implementation teams were established to guide the project through completion. The initiative brought together staff from the Library, University Technology Services, Centre for Student Development and Centre for Leadership in Learning, as well as representatives from the MSU, the GSA and faculty in a joint effort to offer combined services in the Learning Commons with input from both students and faculty. Congratulations to the Mills Learning Commons implementation teams, and our sincere thanks for your work in helping to create this exciting Library space for McMaster students!
