The Map Collection in Mills Library will be closed to the public for approximately 6 weeks beginning Friday April 28 and running until around the second week in June.
The closure is necessary to allow a construction crew to drill holes and run wiring through the floor of the McLay Reading Room [directly above] for the construction of the Library's new Learning Commons.
Cathy Moulder and Gord Beck will be temporarily relocated to the Wong e-Classroom during this period (Mills Library Room 107).
The DLI is a co-operative effort by the Humanities and Social Science Federation of Canada (HSSFC), the Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL), the Canadian Association of Public Data Users (CAPDU), the Canadian Association of Small University Libraries (CASUL), Statistics Canada and other government departments.
McMaster Geography and Earth Sciences Society recently held a Leave No Trace photo contest. As environmentally aware citizens, the Society was promoting the adage Take only photos, leave only footprints .
Students, staff, faculty and alumni were invited to submit photos in four categories: Humourous, Flora/Fauna, Nature/Geology and Culture/People and Places.
Contest photos will be on display in the Lloyd Reeds Map Collection, Mills Library Room 110 until May 1, 2006.
As of April 24th, Statistics Canada will make all electronic publications found on their website freely available without cost! Print publications may require purchasing. If you find anything on the Statistics Canada website asking for money, please visit the library to see if there is another means of accessing the item.
The Government Printing Office (GPO) has released a new version of the United States Catalog of Government Publications. The catalog can be used to find federal publications, both historical and current, online and in print. It supplies both a simple and advanced search and can be limited to particular collections. Statistics Canada is launching a new search engine for their website. The simple search will now only return results that contain all search terms. The advanced search will remain the same, allowing you to search for any words, all words, or phrase searches.
The U.S. National Archive and Records Administration collection of web material is now searchable by keywords. The collection consists of material captured from Federal Public Agencies public web sites as they existed prior to January 20, 2005. The pilot program released 101 historic films, including U.S. government newsreels from World War II, documentaries by NASA on the history of the spaceflight program and 1930's motion pictures on the history and establishment of national and state parks.

The January 2006 Postal code conversion file (PCCF) - 92F0153UCE and the Postal codes by federal riding file (PCFRF) (2003 Representation Order) - 92F0193UCB are now available. Both the PCCF and PCFRF reflect postal code data from the Canada Post Corporation up to and including October 2005.
The PCCF will again contain the Federal Electoral Districts for both the 1996 and 2003 Representation Orders.
