Form Subdivisions Coded In Subject Headings

Table of Contents

  1. History

    • The Library of Congress started using the ($v) subfield for form subdivisions in the (6XX) Subject Access Fields in February 1999.

    • LC continued to use ($x) subfield for topical subdivisions

  2. Local Past Practices

    • In 1999 when LC started using ($v) form subdivision Horizon was not capable of handling this subfield

    • Therefore the import sources were changed so that the form subdivisions ($v) subfield were changed to ($x) subfield, this was a temporary work around until the problem with ($v) form subdivision was resolved

    • There was a problem in the implementation of ($v) subfield for form subdivisions in the last version of Horizon (7.2)

    • In the current version of Horizon (7.3) extensive testing was performed and the problem with implementing ($v) was resolved, however this subfield could not be enabled until BA relink utility was run on the catalogue

    • BA relink utility was run in December 2004, this re-linked bibliographic and authority records and created new authorities for records that could not be linked

    • Since December 2004 Horizon has been ($v) enabled

  3. Local Current Practices

    • As of the end of February 2005 the form subdivision ($v) is indexed

    • As of March 23, 2005, the import sources will be changed so that the form subdivision ($v) will not be changed to the topical subdivision ($x) on import of records. Action: Karen Foster will change the import sources as of March 23, 2005.

  4. Workflow Procedures
    • Copy Cataloguers: no change to workflow

    • Copy Cataloguer-Authorities (Soo Choe): no change to workflow

    • Original Cataloguers: Code as required in regular workflow

  5. Using Form Subdivisions

    • Form subdivisions coded in the ($v) subfield in 6XX fields Subject Access Fields describe the format of the item, not the subject matter of the item

    • Topical subdivisions ($x) subfield in 6XX fields Subject Access Fields are used to describe the subject matter of the item.

    • The order for using multiple subdivisions is described in the Subject Cataloguing Manual: Subject Headings H 1075 sec. 2 The following is an example of one of the order that may be used for multiple subdivisions: [topical subdivision ($x)]-[chronological subdivision ($y)] - [form subdivision ($v)]

    • Subject Cataloguing Manual: Subject Headings, Free Floating Subdivisions H 1095 "Most form subdivisions coded $v in the list may also be used as topical subdivisions coded $x when assigned to works about the form (see Subject Cataloguing Manual: Subject Headings H 1075 sec. 1d)."

  6. Form Subdivisions

    • The following list of form subdivisions is not maintained, for an up-to-date list of form subdivisions see Subject Cataloguing Manual: Subject Headings, Free Floating Subdivisions H 1095
