Science Citation Index (via the Web of Science)
Coverage:1976 to the present

This is a multi-disciplinary science database that indexes over 6000 journals from a variety of science disciplines. Abstracts are included from 1991 onwards. At McMaster this database is available from 1976 onwards; previous to that date it is available in paper copy (1945-1979) and located in Thode Indexes & Abstracts (ZQ 11 .S35, 2nd floor). The database offers searching by topic, author, address, journal title, etc. and a Cited Reference search. Full text links are available for journals to which McMaster subscribes through the getit! link.

New, January 2010:  Conference Proceedings Citation Index (1990- ) can be searched from within the Science Citation index.


Includes access to the Endnote Web citation manager: accounts must initially be created from within the McMaster ip range.

ScienceDirect provides online access to over 2000 journals published by Elsevier from their first volumes to current, with strong collections in the social sciences, pure and applied sciences, engineering, and medicine.  This service allows you to browse or search the journals and access full text articles (PDF & HTML).  McMaster has access to most but not all journals on this site.

SciFinder by Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) enables users to search online the Chemical Abstracts family of databases. SciFinder is searchable by chemical structure, chemical name, CAS Registry Number, molecular formula, chemical reaction, research topic, author name, specific reference (abstract number or patent number),company name/organization and table of contents of selected journals.

The following databases are available through SciFinder: 1. CA Plus - an enhanced version of Chemical Abstracts - 1907 to present, 2. CAS Registry - a database of chemical structures and names indexed by CAS from 1957 to the present, 3. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI) has launched SciTech Connect, a new portal to free, publicly available DOE research and development (R&D) results. SciTech Connect incorporates the contents of two of the most popular core DOE collections:  OSTI's Information Bridge, and Energy Citations databases.

SEDAR
Coverage:1997 to the present

The SEDAR (System for Electronic Document Analysis and Retrieval) site contains the electronic filings that Canadian companies are required to submit to the Canadian securities regulatory authorities. Annual reports, financial statements, and press releases from public companies are available. Electronic filings from mutual fund companies are also included. Users can view new filings and browse or search for companies. The site is available in both French and English.

Society, Culture & Politics in Canada: Canadiana Pamphlets from McMaster University, 1818-1929

This collection, digitized from originals held within the Library's Research Collections, contains pamphlets that deal with many aspects of Canadian history, literature, social and political conditions. Included are pamphlets on religion and churches, all levels of government, elections, peace movements and war service, Communism, local communities and labor organizations to name but a few of the topics covered. Approximately 250 pamphlets date from before 1867. Several of the pamphlets are in the French language. There are a very small number of pamphlets in this collection that have no relation to Canada; they are mainly British and American although a number of pamphlets concern Cuba and Third World countries. At least one pamphlet about Ireland is in Gaelic; a few pamphlets are in other languages.

McMaster University Library acquired this collection from various sources in the twentieth century, including many from the Ontario Historical Society Library.

The premiere database for locating articles in the field of sociology, Sociological Abstracts indexes some 1,800 international serial publications. Related disciplines include social and behavioral sciences, including anthropology, criminology, demography, education, law and penology, race relations, social psychology and urban studies. Also provides abstracts of books, book chapters, book reviews, dissertations, and conference papers.
Records added since 1973 contain in-depth, nonevaluative abstracts of journal articles. Many records from key journals in sociology, published since 2001, also include the references cited in the bibliography of the source article.

The SPIE Digital Library is the most extensive database available on optics and photonics research, with more than 375,000 papers spanning biomedicine, communications, sensors, defense and security, manufacturing, electronics, energy, and imaging.  Our subscription includes conference proceedings from 1962 onwards, fulltext for ten journals, and some 200 e-books.

Some Proceedings volumes are not available online, either because they were not published, or because SPIE does not have the electronic rights.
