North American Immigrant Letters, Diaries and Oral Histories
Coverage:1840 to present

Contemporaneous letters and diaries, oral histories, interviews, and other personal narratives provide a unique and personal view of what it meant to immigrate to America and Canada between 1800 and 1950. Includes 2,162 authors and approximately 100,000 pages of information, and in selected cases, the actual audio voices of the immigrants.

Time period: 1840 to the present, focusing heavily on the period from 1920 to 1980.

Scope: People from many countries are represented, including more recent waves of immigrants from Latin America and Asia; includes several thousand pages of Ellis Island Oral History interviews.

Disciplines: Labour historians will benefit from details describing work in restaurants, meat packing plants, mines, railroads, and factories. Sociologists will find lengthy passages describing immigrant schooling, social life, domestic life, and community rituals. Students of literature will find descriptions of the events that inspired Upton Sinclair and Theodore Dreiser.

Subjects include what women wore, the conditions under which they worked, what they ate, what they read, and how they amused themselves; how frequently they attended church, how they viewed their connection to God, and how they prayed; their relationships with lovers, family and friends.

ODESI: a Voyage in Data Discovery

Provides university researchers with access to datasets in a web-based data extraction system, and allows the downloading of data into external statistical analysis packages. The odesi project targets Statistics Canada datasets, datafiles from Gallup Canada and other polling companies, public-domain files such as the Canadian National Election Surveys and selected files from the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR). As of May 2008, content is still being added.

Online geographical bibliography
Coverage:1985 - 2005

GEOBIB indexes international literature on all aspects of geography. It includes references to books, articles, atlases, maps, pamphlets and other publications under both topical and regional subjects. Updated in part by Current Geographical Publications. Bibliography covering the period up to 1976 is available in paper format as the Research Catalogue of the American Geographical Society (MILLS Bookstacks ZG 58.A5).

As of December 2005 The American Geographical Society has ceased adding new content to GEOBIB, but the database will remain available indefinitely.

The site indexes and provides access to over 1.6 million electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) freely available from over 800 institutions worldwide. Search for keywords from titles, author names, abstracts, subjects, university/publisher and more. Use More search options to limit searches to a particular field, language, and date range. The search results will include links to full-text theses/dissertations residing on the original hosting site, usually the institutional repository of the school that granted the degree.

Oral History Online

Oral History Online is a landmark database of English language oral histories. It contains at present more than 30,000 pages of full-text content that is available nowhere else in electronic format, much of which is available nowhere else in any format. This full-text material includes Ellis Island oral history narratives, exclusive Black Panther Party interviews, and other oral histories. With each quarterly update of Oral History Online, the publisher will add more of such proprietary (in-copyright) full-text interviews.

Indexes over 2 million doctoral dissertations and master's theses completed at accredited North American and selected European colleges and universities. Includes full-text access to many McMaster theses (send an email to request one). For other institutions, 24 page previews are available.
