Nonprofit Explorer is a free tool for researching the finances of over 600,000 nonprofit organizations. Most federal tax-exempt organizations in the United States must file an annual information return form with the Internal Revenue Service (i.e., IRS Form 990). These filings can be searched by name, keyword, city, state, nonprofit category (e.g., education, health, etc.) or organization type (e.g., 501(c)(3)).

Each entry includes an organization's total revenue, expenses, liabilities, and assets for a given year. Revenue is further divided into contributions, program services, investment income, and net inventory & sales. Expenses such as executive compensation, professional fundraising fees, and other salaries & wages can also be noted. A percentage reflects each item's contribution to total revenue or expenses. When possible, links to an organization's full IRS 990 forms (in PDF) are provided, with some dating back to 2001.
