World War, 1939-1945

World War 1939-1945 poster collection. – 1936-1945; predominant 1939-1945. – 213 items.
Although this is mainly a collection of posters, there is one photograph (#C24) and one calendar (#C21).

Posters have been organized by issuing country: A (Australia), C (Canada), B (Britain) and U (USA).
Posters have been described as follows:
- Assigned country and numerical order. Information can be found on the reverse upper-right hand corner of each item.
- Issuing authority
- Artist, if known.
- Title, if given.
- Date Published, if given, or estimated.
- Size in (cm), measured vertically and horizontally from edge of poster itself.

Imperial Tobacco Co. of Canada posters
Imperial Tobacco Co. of Canada in Montreal manufactured Sweet Caporal cigarettes. Thus it is assumed that these two series of posters were issued by this company for their employees. Both series were issued in English and French. They have numbers stamped on them; C numbers have not been assigned to them by them by the archivist. Accession 11-2010.
Series 1: Happiness, numbered 1-16 on bottom right; each poster has an additional number “5848” (posters 1-8), “5938” (posters 9-16) stamped in the bottom left corner.
The tagline for poster 1 is“Qu’ils soient joyeux”. The taglines for posters 2, 4-16 are: “Keep “Em Happy!”, “Rendez-les joyeux!”. The taglines appear on the bottom of each poster.
Poster 1, in French. “Nous voulons des Sweet Caps! Notre ouvrage est de produire. Fasions de notre pour, Qu’ils soient joyeux”. [You want Sweet Caps! Our job is to produce the best so you will be happy]. Illustrated with a solider smoking.
Poster 2, in English and French. “Post Office, Have You Let Him down? Don’t disappoint the boys.” The posters are illustrated with soldiers at a post office, two receiving mail and one unhappy one without mail.
Poster 3, in French. It has been assigned to this series because it has “5848” stamped in the corner and number 3 in the centre. It has no tagline. “L’appréciation de votre cooperation east exprimée dans cette lettre”. [Appreciation for your assistance is contained in this letter.] It is illustrated by a little girl asking her father. “Qu’est-ce qu’il dit papa?” [What does it say daddy?] The text of the letter follows: “.. et merci beaucoup pour les cigarettes. Elles ont été très appréciées. Un gros meric à ceux qui contribuent àla preparation de ces paquets. Votre fils qui vous aime, Pierre. Un bon bec à petite souer. [Thanks so much for the cigarettes. They are most welcome. A big thanks to those who made them.  Your loving son, Pierre. A kiss for my little sister.]
Poster 4, in English and French. “‘Make up’ his parcel before you ‘make up’ your face. He’s waiting.” The posters are illustrated by a woman at a desk applying her make up.

Poster 7, in English and French. Begin with the text of a letter: “gift parcel – ‘smokers’ for the soldiers. When mail day rolls around even letters must take second place until cigarette lists have been scanned. We on active service certainly appreciate everything you are doing. Cheerio for now John.” “Your co-operation is making this possible. Let’s keep up the good work to”. In French, the letter writer’s name is “Paul”.
Poster 8, in English and French. “Waiting! This soldier has an appointment with the parcel you are sending. Get the parcels out on time and” The posters are illustrated by a soldier standing on a dock looking at ships.
Poster 9, in English and French. “and the cigarettes arrived on time. Believe me. They are certainly appreciated ‘thanks a million’. Well mom. So long for now, Your Own Bud, P.S. I miss you.” The posters are illustrated with a mother reading this letter with a photograph of Bud behind her. In French, the letter writer’s name is changed to “Jean” but the name “Bud” still appears in the photograph.
Poster 10, in English and French. “Errors Cause Delay. Don’t keep the boys waiting.” The posters are illustrated with a young woman tying.
