Walker, Alan

Alan Walker fonds.  Third accrual, accession 43-2007. – ca. 1836-1908 – 24 cm of textual records.
The third accrual of the Alan Walker fonds consists of 2 series: (1) letters of Franz Liszt and his circle; and (2) copies of unpublished letters of Hans von Bülow to Cécile Gorrison-Mutzenbecher.


Series 1
Letters of Franz Liszt and his circle, – ca. 1836-1908 – 30 items.

Box 30
Series consists of 30 autograph signed letters of Franz Liszt and his circle, dated ca.1836 to 1908, collected by Dr. Walker over a period of several years.  Included are 14 letters written and signed by Liszt—in French or German—to such figures as: Theodor Döhler, Austrian pianist and composer; William Steinway of the well known piano company; Julius Benedict, composer and conductor; Adolf Fürstner, music publisher; and , Berthold Kellerman, and Adolf Henselt, distinguished musicians and followers of Liszt.  The remaining letters—in German or English—are between a variety of persons known by Liszt; among the letter-writers are: Marie Lipsius (“La Mara”), writer and early editor of Liszt’s published letters and papers; Sir Charles Halle, conductor; Joseph Joachim, an early follower of Liszt who later broke with him; and former pupils and noted musicians Eugène d’Albert, Sophie Menter, Emil and George Liebling, Walter Bache, and Hans von Bülow, who was married to Liszt’s daughter.

F.5       Autograph signed letter from Liszt to Sophie Menter (1846-1918), dated "Argenteau (Lüttich) 18 March 1886".  With envelope and silhouette of Liszt.

F.7       Autograph signed letter from Liszt to Adolf Henselt (1814-1889), undated, but probably September 1842.

Series consists of copies of 104 unpublished letters from Hans von Bülow to Cécile Gorrison- Mutzenbecher, 1886-1889, compiled by Professor Walker for research purposes.  Included are transcriptions and photocopies.
