Most
of the information in the table below was transcribed from a card catalogue
maintained in the Russell archives reading room. Further enhancement of some of
these descriptions is expected. Meanwhile, in some cases, the description was
enhanced with information recorded in Russell: the Journal of Bertrand
Russell Studies (indicated by RJ references in the table, i.e. volume and issue
number).
Arranged alphabetically by ‘Primary subject of photo’. Where the primary subject
repeats—e.g. ‘Russell, Bertrand’—further arrangement is by ‘Date’. Several
photographs include multiple individuals; in these cases, only one individual
is listed under ‘Primary subject’, while the others are listed in
‘Description’.

|
B&w photograph, 11 x 7.8 cm
Two young men with the Museum in background. One of them is holding a camera and stick. They are possibly students of Russell’s who taught at the University of Chicago in 1938-39.
Note: It is not known how or when this photograph was placed into Box 2.22 of the Edith Russell fonds. It should have been included as part of Archives I. Perhaps it remained at the Bertrand Russell Peace Foundation and was shipped with Edith’s papers. When S. Turcon described those papers she may not have recognized what this photograph was. Or it may have been placed in the box at some unknown time after she described the photographs, like the Plaisance Hotel photograph was.

|
B&W photograph, 18 x 12.7 cm
Kenneth Blackwell has written on the verso: “The Plaisance Hotel in April 1977. Intersection of Stony Island Ave. & 60th St., Chicago. (on the Midway.)BR & family lived there 1938-9."
Note: Carl Spadoni wrote the identifying information on the envelope in which the photograph was placed. Neither Spadoni nor Blackwell can remember when the photograph arrived or from whom. Sheila Turcon found it in Box 2.22 of the Edith Russell fonds in 2018. Since it clearly does not belong there, a new recent acquisition has been created and it has been moved here.

b&w photos taken by the photographer Gaby (Gabriel Desmarais) in
Russell's library in Wales in October 1961. 1527: 2 8x10 photos of
Russell. Photo 1--BR in his wing-back chair, head and shoulders, wearing a
rose in his lapel. Photo 2--BR, the same as above, only full body, with a ms.
added to the photo on the left. The signed ms. of one paragraph varies
slightly from “The Road to Peace” in The Bomb: Challenge and Answer (B108,)
pp. 66–7; also as “Steps to Peace” in PfM, pp. 226–7. This article was
dictated; the ms. version possibly done at Gaby’s request. See Gaby:
Photographie, and his BR interview in Montreal Gazette, 20 Nov. 1988, p. d-6.
Note: In May 2007, a cd containing 6 scanned images of BR as well as the ms.
described above was added to the accession. The images were sent by Ronald
Desmarais in preparation for a sale of all of Gaby’s BR photos which did not
take place. 1545: 2 11x14 photos of Russell standing in his library

Telegraph House grounds
|
Seven b&w snapshots, each 8.3 x 6 cm. One is inscribed on the back in Patricia Russell’s hand “some views in the grounds”. The archivist believes these are of the Telegraph House grounds in the 1930s.
Note: These photos were found in Box 2.22 in 2018. It is not known how or when these photographs were placed into the Edith Russell fonds. They should have been included as part of Archives I. Perhaps they remained at the Bertrand Russell Peace Foundation and were shipped with Edith’s papers. When S. Turcon described those papers she may not have recognized what these photographs were. Or they may have been placed in the box at some unknown time after she described the photographs, like the Plaisance Hotel photograph was.
