Manuscripts. (Published Books)
The following is a list of manuscripts, typescripts and galley proofs of the published books written by Mowat Additional material related to the book (list of illustrations, maps, etc.) has also been included. The notes following each title describe the material included, as well as the manuscript itself. The manuscripts are arranged in chronological order.
Box 2:
People of The Deer (1952)
Ts. of 19 chapters which are not in final order as published. The original and revised copy of Chapter 8 is included as well as one folder of "entire page corrections". Galley proofs are also included.
Boxes 3-4:
The Regiment (1955)
Original ts. of 26 chapters and Prelude. It has been corrected and revised and contains many inserted pages. Chapter titles and order vary in published version. There is a mimeographed copy of the final ts. with no annotations or corrections. Galley proofs have extensive autograph notes.
Box 5:
Lost in The Barrens (1956)
Original title was "Lost In the Barrenlands". Ts. includes 29 chapters as well as a carbon copy of Chapter 28 which was Chapter 29 in published form. The ts. contains autograph notes. The galley proofs are labelled "duplicate galleys for author".
Box 6:
The Dog Who Wouldn't be (1957)
The ts. consists. of the chapters in their original order and is lacking chapters 6, 16 and 18. It contains corrections made by Mowat. The galley proofs are labelled "duplicate galleys for author's files."
Box 7:
Coppermine Journey (1958)
Subtitle: "An account of a great adventure selected from the journal s of Samuel Hearne ." The ts. consists. of chapters 1 -16 in their original order as received as well as a carbon copy of the Foreword and map labelled "Hearne's Journeys". The final draft ts. is labelled "Hearne Manuscript."
Box 8:
The Grey Seas Under (1959)
The two ts. are labelled "early draft" and "later draft" and both are incomplete. There is also one folder entitled "Miscellaneous material".
Box 9:
The Desperate People (1959)
The ts. is entitled "Darkness Without Dawn". Also included in this section are copies of the woodcuts used in the book and a description of each woodcut, correspondence with the Atlantic Monthly Press about the book, one sheet entitled "general notes" and other material. The galley proofs are of the preliminary matter only.

There are two copies of the ts. as well as a copy of the plan and outline of the volume. The galley proofs contain autograph notes. There is also one folder included which contains pictures and correspondence relating to the book.
