Articles, 1946-1975 Note: A variety of short pieces composed by W.L. Morton. As well as contributions to both scholarly and popular journals, there are introductions and forewords written for inclusion in the books of others, briefs to Royal Commissions and short items for various encyclopedias. Because most of the pieces are undated this material has been arranged by title or by subject where the title is lacking. Any correspondence received attached to an article has been removed and placed with e general correspondence. The nature and date of the letter has been noted in pencil, within square brackets on the article. Most of the items in this section are in typescript form with a few manuscript drafts. Because of the close inter-relationship between lectures and articles, with the former frequently reappearing as the latter, researchers are advised to search both categories for specific titles.

Lectures. These lectures, ranging from very formal scripts which are apparently ready for publication to handwritten point form notes on file cards, show Morton's wide range of interests and demonstrate his involvement with a public wider than the purely academic one. They have been arranged alphabetically under the title of the lecture. References have been given in the case of series titles (e.g. Champlain Lecture) and lectures delivered as part of a group of lectures have been kept together under the title of the first, with references given from the place where the lectures were delivered (e.g. University of Otago) and from the titles of the other lectures in the series. Because of the close correspondence between lectures and articles researchers in pursuit of a particular title are advised to check both article and lecture series.
