Magazine and newspaper work. – 1968-2004 – 2.24 m of textual records and graphic material. – Title based on content of series. – Boxes 1-13.
This series focuses on Harris’s work as a freelance writer, staff writer, columnist, and senior editor. The first part of the series consists of articles written for major Canadian magazines and newspapers, including Maclean’s, Chatelaine, Saturday Night, Financial Post Magazine, Toronto Life, the Toronto Star, and the Globe & Mail. Files include fashion spreads from Maclean’s, research articles, notes and transcripts of interviews, typescripts, copies of published articles, and correspondence from editors and readers. Some of the Maclean’s fashion spreads are found in Series 9 Oversize.
The second group of files relates to MH as the author of a series of arts articles for Applied Arts Quarterly, and as a columnist (‘Marjorie’s Way’ from The Canadian in the late 1970s, and Globe & Mail gardening columns from 1992 to 2004).
The final section documents MH’s role as co-editor of Toronto Life Gardens in 1996-97 and as editor-in-chief of Gardening Life beginning in 1997. These latter files include internal correspondence (for example, administrative memos and story ideas), drafts of articles by MH, promotional materials, and correspondence from readers.
Series 1 also includes a few promotional items written by MH for commercial clients.
The files are arranged chronologically except for the ‘Marjorie’s Way’ and Globe & Mail gardening columns, which are grouped at the end of the series, followed by drafts of articles which have not been dated or confirmed as having been published.
Early notes and drafts for some articles can be found in a notebook in Series 6.
