BOX 1
F.1       Incomplete fragment, all undated [all appear to be 1919]:
ALs, p. 2 only:  “... and all the few concerned - that I regard myself absolutely and finally as much bound to you in honour in this particular as though the law and the Church had already made us irrevocably wife and man ...”, [continues], 1 p. [single sheet folded and closely written on 4 sides].

AL, p. 3 only:  “The Colvins wrote to me frightened, scared letters begging me to do nothing rash, to wait and wait and wait ...  I had rather be damned than have ever had veins like that ...”, [continues] 1 p. [single sheet folded and closely written on 4 sides].

AL, p. 3 only:  “...  like and do what you like.  It’s not a question of being clever:  we all know you are that; but of having tons and tons of level common sense; and the inflexible determination to come together before an undue time has passed ...”, [continues] , 1 p. [single sheet folded and closely written on 4 sides] .

ALs, p. 3 only:  “... all [    ] I look like Carson then they think it a compliment.  I don't.  Edward always says then indignantly if he's there:  “The top of Jim'’s head is more intellectual than Carson's ever was ...”, [continues] 1 p. [single sheet folded and closely written on 3 sides].

AL, p. 2 only:  “When Lady Colvin cried I was horrified that I did not feel.  I have a wide sorrow for you and her and all who care for me - such few as have any approach to real knowledge of the person ...” [continues] , 1 p. [single sheet folded and closely written on 4 sides] .

ALs - p. 3 only:  “... first time in seventeen years of intimate friendship through joy and care, has been holding aloof.  That has been the last straw, perhaps, with me....”, [continues] 1 p. [single sheet folded and closely written on 3 sides].
AL, pp. 3-7 only:  “... thing is the matter with me this morning.  I believe your Garvin is changing, softening, growing, without losing anything in him that should be the basis of a man ...” [continues] 5 pp. [8" x 10" pages closely written on both sides].

ALs, p. 3 only:  “... together.  Of course I can't come down.  If I could: But will write gratitude tomorrow to Lady Palmer. Nothing but work today” [continues] 1 p. [8" x 10" page, written one side].

ALs, p. 5 only:  “... well, well, I must end this letter.  So very glad the children are converted. Give my love to them and Nannie ...” [continues], 1 p. [8" x 10", 2 sides] [Later than 1919?]. And brown envelope which accompanied J.L. Garvin's letter, annotated [not by J.L. Garvin].

F. 2      ALs, [incomplete] pp. 3-8 only:  “I could deliver Maurice from slavery: for a slave he is now, like few white men, and nothing else.  My heart is sorry for him ...” [continues], [Spring, 1919?] 6 pp. [8" x 10" pages, closely written on 11 sides].

J.L. Garvin's Letters to Oliver Woods, 1921-1945
Garvin’ s letters are almost all in his own hand and are sometimes accompanied by their envelopes. Most have been transcribed into typescript, and many of the carbon copies of those typescripts have been annotated by Oliver Woods for an article, based on his stepfather's letters, commissioned by The Times in 1968. (See also article in Wood’s writing, Box 49, F.51)
