To Finding Aid

Ontario publishing partnerships collection. — 1870-1878. — 27 certificates.

In December 1869 the province of Ontario passed into law the Registration of Co-Partnerships Act. It became necessary thereafter to register partnerships of two or more persons in business. Registration was to include the full names of the partners, the name and nature of the business, and the date which the partnership was originally established.

Practically all of the partnership certificates in this collection pertain to publishing, printing, book selling, and allied trades. The certificates were all registered at the Registry Office in Toronto. Researchers are also directed to Record Group 55 in the Archives of Ontario, which contains a much larger collection of partnership certificates. For further information on legal registrations of partnerships, see Elizabeth Hulse’s A Dictionary of Toronto printers, publishers, booksellers and the allied trades 1798-1900 (Toronto: Anson-Cartwright Editions, 1982), pp. xx-xxi.
