To Fonds Description

Marian Engel fonds. Second accrual (20-1992). Note: Third through sixth accruals have been interfiled in this accrual.

The correspondence, which is located in the first two boxes (Box 31 & 32), is a mixture of the professional and the personal. Indeed, where Engel is concerned, it is almost impossible to separate the two, for many of her closest confidantes were also writers and literary topics share space with recipes and health reports. At the end of Box 32 are pieces about Engel and other materials received by her.
There are two boxes of manuscript material (Box 33 & 34), one consisting primarily of drafts of short stories and articles and the other of a large number of segments, in multiple drafts, of Engel's last, unfinished novel, Elizabeth and the Golden City. This last box also contains a significant series of notebooks; Engel appears to have continued to write regularly in her cahiers until her death.

Boxes 31-32 Correspondence
Most of the letters which follow are to Marian Engel - there are few copies of her replies. Letters in the miscellaneous alphabetical files have not been listed individually - there is usually just a single item written to Engel unless otherwise indicated.

Box 34
Notebooks and Elizabeth and the Golden City (unfinished final novel).
As with the earlier accrual of Engel's notebooks (see Box 6) the cahiers in this segment of the archive are a highly significant source for those who would understand the woman and her works. They are compendia of her innermost thoughts, plot outlines, drafts of letters never sent, shopping lists, and, most poignantly, accounts of her illness and treatment in the years and months preceding her death.
Although they are undated for the most part, an attempt has been made to arrange the cahiers in chronological order and to give some indication (although not a complete listing) of the contents of each. As with the earlier accrual, notebooks would be started, discontinued and then taken up again, adding to the complications of chronological arrangement.

Engel's Last, Unpublished Novel - most frequently entitled Elizabeth and the Golden City.
The archivist has attempted to reconstruct the multiple drafts and fragments of this novel to reflect the creative process as accurately as possible. Since there is no published book from which to work backwards (from drafts which are most like the published version to those that vary most from it) nor even a final manuscript version, this reconstruction has been difficult and the arrangement which follows is tentative at best.
The process of organization was compounded by the number of strands in the book. There are two clearly separate threads: the story of Elizabeth and her sister Frances who grow up to share one man, an English Major modeled on the historical Major Rains, with much of the novel set in Toronto and Montreal, and a futuristic story of a community in which one of the dominant themes is the search for a mother through a country of lakes. Although Engel left notes about the overall structure of the book (see the first files below), her notebooks make clear that she continued to struggle with the integration of the various strands of the novel until her death. The novel had a long period of gestation: Frances and Elizabeth sprang out of Engel's Rains research in 1974 ( see F.4 above. This research also contributed to Bear). The Vanishing Lakes book was being worked on in her 1980 notebook (F.6 above) and some of the early typescript drafts date from that year. As she came closer to death herself Engel transformed many of her experiences into sections of the novel; dying Elizabeth looks back over her life and Tanis and Ildelorn inhabit a serene and beautiful place which may be the ultimate "Golden City".
