This accession includes substantial research material and numerous drafts of Berton's book, The Great Depression. There is also a large amount of correspondence, including Berton's own letters to his family while he was serving in the Second World War, two journals, one of which is from the war period, and other manuscript material relating to Artic Grail, The Mysterious North, Starting Out and Why We Act Like Canadians. There are also drafts of articles and shorter pieces and some files relating to Berton's business activities. General correspondence from readers has not been individually listed but has been arranged chronologically.

Juvenilia and Wartime Family Correspondence
F.21 "Diary of the Berton Family on their Journey 'Outside'. Begun by Pierre. September 1 1931." Entries cover the period from 1 September 1931 to April 29 1932. Black covered lined notebook, 19 x 23 cm., entries written in ink, pages numbered 1 - 110.
F.22 "Journal". Entries cover the period from May 2 1939 to circa October 3 1939.
The notebook begins as an account of Berton's summer job working in the Yukon (31 pp.) and continues with notes taken at an army officer training course (19 pp.). There is some doggerel verse (2 pp.) and 2 lists of names (2 pp.) at the back. Black covered lined notebook, 18 x 24 cm., entries written in ink with cartoon-like sketches, especially in the later pages. 54 pp. of the book have been used.
