General Correspondence Files

The files which follow contain, for the most part, business (including invitations and “causes” ) or “fan” mail. They include requests for autographed books, suggestions for future books, requests for manuscript evaluation, invitations to speak, solicitations for donations and letters with information either provided or sought.

The early files (F.1 -F.6) which have subject designations were received so designated; the material in the chronological files covering the period November 1978 to July 1982 (F.8 -F.13) was received in no apparent order and has been resorted by the archivist in order to conform with the organization of the series monthly files which commence in June 1982 and end in December 1983.  This chronological arrangement does not allow name or subject access (although some of the more prominent correspondents have been noted); however the researcher will be able to survey the substantial volume of correspondence handled by Berton and his busy staff during the period covered.

Note: There are “Awards” files at the beginning of the series which follows and “Invitations and Book Requests” at the end, but all of these elements also figure in the chronological files.
