A
Centenary Celebration of McClelland & Stewart Ltd.
Established in 1906, McClelland & Stewart Ltd. is Canada's premier
English literary publisher. This Web site, constructed by McMaster University
Library, celebrates the centenary of McClelland & Stewart–the extraordinary
achievement of this publisher's contribution to Canadian literary culture.
The site is primarily a visual representation of an exhibition at Library
and Archives Canada entitled "Promoting Canadian Authors: 100 Years
of McClelland & Stewart". The exhibition is open to the public
from 13 June 1906 until 4 March 2007. For reasons of copyright and ownership,
only a selection of books, documents and artifacts are digitally represented
here; there are no images of particular materials selected by the exhibition's
curator (Carl Spadoni) from Library and Archives Canada, for example.
Also, the texts of the introduction, themes, and captions appear in their
original, expanded descriptions in English only, not in French. We acknowledge
the generous partnership of Library and Archives Canada and the cooperation
of the McClelland family. The site also presents photographs associated
with the M&S centenary stamp (launched on 26 April 2006) and M&S'
own celebration (9 June 2006). McMaster University Library is the proud
repository of the archives of McClelland & Stewart, Jack McClelland,
and Douglas Gibson Books. In addition, the Library houses a large collection
of M&S imprints. We salute McClelland & Stewart in the steadfast
hope that the company will flourish as literary purveyors of Canadian
culture.
